Mode & Science / Naoki Takizawa Spring Summer 2009 Collection

2008.10.31
Koishikawa Annex

This is the first Mode & Science project conducted in collaboration with fashion designer Naoki Takizawa, in order to activate the scientific specimens accumulated by the University of Tokyo since its foundation as a design resource stimulating creation. By considering the butterfly specimens collected in Japan and abroad as research and teaching material by Kakichi Mitsukuri, professor at the Department of Zoology of the Imperial University of Tokyo, not simply as a historical heritage, but as a design resource, we saw in the decayed, moth-eaten specimens the existence of a temporality spanning over a century, and a plastic pattern most suitable for aesthetic appreciation. We thus transferred those patterns on textile, and created diverse pieces such as jackets, coats, shirts and dresses, which were presented at the Paris collection after this event.
