Main Features of the Exhibition
“Great Figures of Natural History in the 18th century”
“Tracing the history of academism from Sweden to the world, and to Japan”
● This exhibition commemorating the 150th anniversary of Japan-Sweden diplomatic relations is a unique opportunity for the public in Japan to appreciate 66 works of Natural History pertaining to great Swedish scientists: Olof Rudbeck, Carl Linnaeus and Peter Thunberg.
● Rudbeck established an advanced academic system in Uppsala University. Linnaeus, who studied there, implemented a systematic scientific classification that has been adopted long years till now. Thunberg, a student of Linnaeus, visited Japan in 1775 where he interacted with Japanese scientists. Upon his return, he published the book Flora Japonica. The finest items emanating from Natural History in Sweden are displayed here, with a focus on their relationship with Japan.
●Items from the Edo period collected by Thunberg or offered to him in Japan are returning for the exhibition. Additional objects related to Thunberg, and kept at the Botanical Gardens, Koishikawa, Graduate School of Science, University of Tokyo, will be also displayed.
●The exhibition is the fruit of a partnership between the University Museum, the University of Tokyo and Uppsala University. It is the second exhibition of the “Intermediatheque Natural History Series.” The Intermediatheque will further develop this exhibition series in the future, with various international academic institutions.
