In February, the JP Tower Museum INTERMEDIATHEQUE (IMT) is opening “Pure Forms: Currencies of African Tribes,” the second installation of its Quai Branly Tokyo project jointly organized with the Quai Branly Museum in Paris.
Since the opening of the Intermediatheque last year, the present project is an unprecedented attempt at bridging together two institutions, a French national museum with the University Museum, the University of Tokyo, through the loan of their collections, the Quai Branly Museum selecting items from its prestigious collections.
In “Pure Forms: Currencies of African Tribes,” we will exhibit some twenty currencies of African tribes covering Chad, Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Congo and Gabon. While circulating since ancient times as currencies, the characteristic purity of their forms reaches perfection.
This public exhibition will provide a unique opportunity to present a first-class collection bridging ethnology and sculpture, rarely seen in the context of Japanese museums.
