We renew part of the permanent exhibition in COLONNADE3, “Made in UMUT: The University of Tokyo Collection”, to showcase 13 West African musical instruments.
In this exhibition, we introduce traditional West African musical instruments such as “kora”, “ngoni” (strings) and “bala” (xylophone), which were only passed on by jeli (hereditary artists who perform in the oral tradition). As these are rarely seen in Japan, it is a unique opportunity to introduce the beauty of form characteristic of West African musical instruments.
